Excursión a garrovillas de alconétar y san antonio de padua

Ruins of the convent of san antonio de padua

We will continue the route with a guided tour through the center of Plasencia. In this monumental town on the banks of the river Jerte we will stroll through its historic center. Next to the bell that crowns one of the towers of the Town Hall we will see a curious character perched. Who is he? We will unveil it during the visit… We will also visit the walls, the Convent of Santo Domingo (current Parador de Turismo) and the Old and New Cathedrals. In the first one we will appreciate the influence of the Romanesque, while in the second one we will observe the careful ornamentation of the plateresque that so much emphasized in other Castilian cities like Salamanca.
First we will take a guided tour of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe. In this monumental jewel declared a World Heritage Site, we will get to know its main artistic treasures, including works by Zurbarán, El Greco and Goya. We will also immerse ourselves in the fascinating history of the monastery, built in the 13th century. We will remember the most relevant episodes that have taken place in this place where important people such as the Catholic Monarchs or Christopher Columbus have passed through.

Garrovillas de alconétar (cáceres)

From the hermitage of Cristo del Humilladero, which is located at the exit of Garrovillas, the path starts on the left hand side. As soon as we start walking, the convent of San Antonio de Padua appears on the left of the path, a representative monument from the time of the Catholic Monarchs, which is worth a visit.
The stage ends in this town, after traveling more than 35 km through a varied landscape, from the most abrupt areas in the vicinity of the Pinar de Garrovillas, through the wildest areas of scrubland or the typical oak pastures of the community of Extremadura.
Located in the center-west of the province of Cáceres and west of the town of Garrovillas, this natural area has several watercourses, such as the Rehana stream and the Garciacaballero stream.

Abandonment and neglect in the franciscan convent of san francisco

Europa Nostra, the leading European Heritage organization and the European Investment Bank Institute (EIBI) announce, at a press conference held today at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, the 7 monuments and sites designated as «The 7 Most Endangered 2016» (The 7 Most Endangered 2016). These most endangered sites, located in seven European countries, are:
In addition, for the first time since the creation of the «The 7 Most Endangered» program in 2013, Europa Nostra and the EIBE, following a strong recommendation from a panel of international specialists, have decided to select a very important heritage jewel for Europe and the world, which needs its own category: the Venice Lagoon in Italy (See press release).
All these jewels of European heritage are in serious danger, some due to lack of resources or expertise, others due to neglect or inadequate planning. They therefore require urgent action.
Hispania Nostra, with the support of local organizations, ADENEX, the University of Extremadura and the Town Council of Garrovillas de Alconétar, proposes an urgent intervention program based on volunteer work coordinated and supervised by professional experts. The local community will provide building materials, equipment and personnel, and will house the volunteers. A detailed plan has already been formulated and agreed by the relevant authorities and the program could start in spring 2016.
