Excursión a los cenotes de aldama
cenote ‘el hundido’, a treasure in the middle of the desert
After touring Tampico and Ciudad Madero my first trip through Tamaulipas ends visiting Aldama, the first thing you have to know about this municipality is that there are cenotes, that’s right, this state also has cenotes and here is the deepest in the world which is the Zacatón, it was even used as a testing ground for NASA.
It is home to more than 800,000 bats that inhabit the little known corners of this cavern, its name comes from the time of the revolution where few municipalities of Tamaulipas participated in it, such as Matamoros and Aldama.
In this cavern they hid various treasures including cattle, food and of course money or gold, so to this day some people come with metal detectors in search of finding something.
When you get there you will be amazed with its imposingness because it is an authentic crater, there is a viewpoint a little deteriorated but that will serve you to admire this imposing pool as they call it in this town, the first thing you have to know is that NASA came here with a robot to practice and train their people for a future mission to space, because this cenote has many subway caverns served to maneuver the robot and perform mapping, however the robot could only go down to 319 meters so this cenote is the deepest in the world and is unknown to date the exact depth it has.

These wonders of nature have earned the title of The cenotes you won’t believe exist in Mexico! because it is understood that it is difficult to understand, because when we think of cenotes we immediately think of the cenotes located in La Riviera Maya, however, not only can we find them there. Proof of this are the cenotes of Aldama, which are located in the state of Tamaulipas, in northern Mexico.
The cenote El Zacatón is perhaps the most famous of Aldama in the state of Tamaulipas. It is known as such because of the islands of grass that float on the surface thanks to the wind. It is also the deepest, according to NASA it has a depth of 317 meters.

excursion to «el zacatón» cenote in aldama, tamaulipas.
El Zacatón cenote is perhaps the most famous cenote in Aldama in the state of Tamaulipas. It is known as such because of the floating islet of grass that moves back and forth with the water. It is also the deepest, according to NASA it has a depth of 317 meters.
During the Mexican Revolution, these caverns were used by the rebels to hide cattle and treasures stolen to finance this movement. Currently it has stalactites and stalagmites, as well as various columns and several vaults where different formations have been created.
You can go alone to the cenotes without a tour, but it is recommended to take a tour to have a better experience. It takes approximately two hours to get there from Tampico by road. The best time to visit the cenotes of Tamaulipas is in summer, when the water is at its clearest.
